A peninsula basically serves the same purpose as the kitchen island, but it’s fixed to at least 1 wall, with access to 3 sides rather than 4 like an island. A peninsula is actually seen as an extension of the rest of the kitchen, unlike islands which are a distinct unit separate from the other worktops and cupboards. Due to its’ structure, a peninsula is a great choice for kitchens with a smaller footprint, as it’s more space efficient. It’s much easier to incorporate, and homeowners can choose just how small or big they want it to be.

Tiny kitchens can also be short on counter space, so consider bringing in more with a moving island. An island with wheels allows you to bring it in when it’s needed, then move it to the side, into a closet, or into an adjoining room when it’s not. Most islands also give you additional storage, so you can designate yours for a specific purpose and store all the relevant items there, such as making a baking cart and storing your flour, sugar, rolling pin, and cookie cutters there. When it’s time to bake, the island comes out and you have all the counter space you need and all of your baking items right at hand.

Stainless steel counter-tops paired with exposed, rough-hewn wooden beams create the perfect atmosphere of earthy modern style that the homeowner wanted, rounded off nicely by the choice of neutral colors. Straight, clean lines, seen in the cupboard handles, the wooden floor planks, and the pendant lighting, give the space a stable sense of direction. The choice of dirty white for the cupboards, white accessories, and light gray for the island prevent the dark tones from overpowering the room, bringing an equal amount of light and open feel to the space. Glass accessories were also chosen to keep things light and to balance the solid accents. Wrought-metal furniture around the slate gray dining table counterbalance it’s heavy and solid frame. Well-chosen pieces such as the black plant containers, vases and white lamps add dimension and ground the larger pieces, tying the whole design together.
